Senior specialist in clinical pharmacology at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital, Prof March Blockman says the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is putting doctors at risk and asking them to act unethically.
His comments come after the World Medical Association asked doctors not to implement the IAAF’s new eligibility regulations for classifying female athletes.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed Caster Semenya‘s appeal against rules designed to decrease naturally high testosterone levels in some female runners.
Blockman says, “IAAF’s are putting doctors at risk in suggesting that they need to give certain medication to healthy population without a health indication without published peer-review evidence based and protocol to do it safely for no health benefit.”
