AmaZulu FC defender Marc van Heerden does not believe the club are entirely safe in their plight to avoid relegation.
Usuthu host SuperSport United at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi on Wednesday, desperate for one of two wins that will then secure status.
This is according to the former Orlando Pirates defender. AmaZulu presently have 27 points form 26 games, three ahead of Chippa United and Baroka FC, who are in 14th and 15th respectively.
Even though both those sides are out of form, Van Heerden says the players and staff at the club are not taking things lightly…
Apart from Chippa and Baroka, AmaZulu are also seven points clear of Maritzburg United, who are bottom of the table. It appears as though the main fight for Cavin Johnson’s side is staying clear of the relegation/promotion play-offs.
They did not play this past weekend when the Nedbank Cup took centre stage, but did show good signs of progress when they snapped a two-game defeat to draw the Durban derby with Lamontville Golden Arrows.
Van Heerden believes the break this past weekend has not really helped them.
Van Heerden himself enjoyed a fairly solid derby in Clermont where AmaZulu were held to a 1-1 draw after leading the game.
The 31-year-old fullback feels they could have got all the points from that game, while he was also pleased with his own contribution…
Their opponents for tomorrow will arrive in Durban in supreme form. Three wins and two draws from their past five games make them the form team in South African football alongside leaders Orlando Pirates.
Added to SuperSport’s confidence will be the fact that they stunned Mamelodi Sundown in the Tshwane derby a week ago. Van Heerden says the league’s fourth-placed club will be a tough proposition.
