Corruption in the country dominated UDM leader Bantu Holomisa’s speech at the party’s last rally, ahead of the May 8 general elections.

Hundreds of UDM supporters gathered at the Khutsong Stadium in the West Rand, Gauteng, on Saturday.

Holomisa believes that the party’s stance and work to root out graft should be enough to convince South Africans of the UDM’s commitment to clean governance.

He warns that an outright win for the ANC at the polls will be a free ticket for the governing party to continue to loot the country’s public purse, saying a multi-party government is they way to go for South Africa at the moment.

Media coverage

The UDM leader has accused the IEC and communications regulator ICASA of failing to ensure fair media coverage of all political parties in their election campaigns.

Holomisa used the UDM’s final rally ahead of next week’s elections to talk about corruption in the country. He says people must vote for a multi-party government.

He says his party’s election campaign was tough as more media coverage was given to the bigger parties.

“The IEC has a responsibility to ensure fair coverage of all political parties. and that failing to enforce rules for news people to oblige by the rules that means they have failed to do their job of promoting fair coverage for all political parties.”

Holomisa says although the party has had a difficult campaign due to financial difficulties, he is confident that officials have done all they could to woo voters.

The UDM leader is hopeful the party will increase its seats in the National Assembly in the upcoming polls.

The party won 1% of the votes in 2014, which translated to four seats in Parliament.
