SABC News Panyaza Lesufi - Tuesday marks World Autism Awareness Day

Every year the month of April marks World Autism Month and kicks off with the UN sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day.

The Gauteng government says over the last few years its focus has been to provide adequate learning facilities for students with autism and other disabilities.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says they have invested hundreds of millions of rands in the sector to ensure that learners and their families are supported.

“We need proper schools that can cater to our children, quality schools and schools that have facilities and professionals. We have just opened a new school just outside Sandton specifically for this particular sector and other learners with disabilities so that we can provide the relevant guidance that we need. In 2015 we had only two schools we now have almost 17 new schools that are in that particular sector so our investments has been massive huge and that’s the reason why today (Tuesday) as the International Day of Autism we are pleading for parents and institutions in the community to say don’t feel you are alone, we are here to support you and we are also here to provide guidance and the necessary support that is needed.”
